Collecting photographs and organising.

Everytime I collected signage from a restaurant or takeaway I added it to my mind map and recorded what type of food it sold and where it was taken. This made it easier for me to keep track of what I was doing. I also kept a tally chart of every letter in the alphabet so I could see what I was missing.
The letters I found hardest to find was J, Q, V,W and Y. Therefore I had to do research of places I could find these letters. After I found all of my letters I started to make categories that I could sort my restaurants into. I made a tally of all the different types of food places I collected and then I sorted them into six categories. I think that in my publications I will use colours to make categories and incorporate it within my design decisions.

Summer Project Brief

This brief is part of OUGD504 design in context.
Over summer we were told to take photographs of letterforms A-Z in a certain place and context.
We were also told that what we collected we would make into a publication.
I knew that I wasn't going on holiday over the summer so I started thinking of what I could do at home. I soon came up with the idea to look at type to do with food places in the Northeast. I started by doing a quick brainstorm on the publication.

I thought of the idea of collecting as many different type of food places as I could so I could compare. I also knew that I could collect type that I both liked and didn't like and it was important to collect the whole alphabet so that I had a range to analyse. When looking at the publication I was thinking I could possible colour co-ordinate the different food types and look at making my book easy to navigate around.

Researching Food Reviews

I decided that my theme for the 'Type in Context' Brief that I would do takeaways and restaurants in the northeast. I want to do it in a food review style but talk about the signage and type as well as a little about the food.
As initial research I decided to look at Food review books and websites that exist. This was harder than expected as I could not find review publications only recipes and cookery books.
This can be good as I have identified a gap in the market which is a potential for my book to sell.
However a websites are more of a popular way that people look for reviews on places and food. When looking at Trip Advisor a review website there were aspects that is important for my publication. It has its own rating system used to measure price and how good it is in a quick and easy way to see. It also shows types of food so you can find what you look for faster. The website also includes a lot of opinions which I think was good and makes it more personal. After all of this research I had more of an idea on the content of my publication and what photos I need to collect.
