Small Publication Research

When Doing research into my content for my small publication I looked back at what I had learned during class. I wanted to include aspects that I had learned but at a basic level.
Information I wanted to think about including,

  • Rods and cones
  • RGB and CMYK
  • Hue and Colour
  • Hue, Tone and Saturation
  • Contrasts of hue, saturation and temperature
I also did research to find a quote that I could use in the leaflet and some extra facts. I also looked at some posters on colour theory and how a common theme is to use a circle made out of coloured triangles.

Leaflet Development and Final Outcome

After my critiques I started designing my leaflet on Illustrator. I knew I wanted to include illustrations due to my target audience. I made a list of things that could be dangerous and be found at the bottom of a lake or stream. I came up with the ideas of including pike, weeds, rubbish, glass and I though of adding part of a skeleton to suggest someone else has drown there before. I knew I wanted to illustrate digitally because the images would be sharper and would be appropriate to my target audience.

When adding my information I new I needed a font that would be easy to read for children. I did some research into fonts that are used in children's books. The typeface that stood out to me was Century Schoolbook because it is used in children's literature and is a serif font that can look serious in certain contexts. I also wanted the longer sentences of text to be left alined as this is the easiest layout to read. I also tried to make the text a suitable size. I added only minimal information and changed my design so that on the back would be the emergency number 999 and a website you can look on for further information. I thought this was more suitable to the target audience.

When looking at paper I wanted it to be thick so it would not tear easy at the small fold. I also wanted the paper to have a texture so it was more interactive for children. I choose Colourplan Ice White paper which was 270gsm. I worked out that I can get 7 leaflets out of a A1 sheet so it would be easy to produce. However when I printed my final design on this paper the ink around the fold began to fall off a little bit. Therefore if I was to print again I would opt for the same 270gsm and the same colour but maybe have a gloss finish.
Tests of the leaflet
I did many tests printing the leaflet making sure the illustrations were to a good quality and the
text was to a good size. I also had to work out how to print it double sided so that it was layout in
the right way on both sides. Overall I think that children would benefit from my leaflet and it does
it's purpose well.

Information Leaflet Group Critique 2

For this critique I made a mock up of the leaflet design I was wanting to develop to get some last feedback.

I decided to add a flap to make the leaflet more interactive for children. I talked through my ideas for the leaflet and showed my mock up and I got some feedback.
  • Thick paper is needed to avoid tearing
  • Think more about the placement of the words
  • Maybe add a child in the water
  • Instead of having what to do in the water think of other information which could be more useful.
  • Easy to read writing for children
I talked through this feedback with the group and discussed that it maybe was not a good idea to include a child in the water as if the child might not identify themselves with the child and think it is not aimed at them. And without the child it looks more like it is aimed at individuals. I agreed with the fact that when children are in the water and could be drowning that they would not be calm enough to remember what to do. So I will come up with some other information to go on the back which is more appropriate.

Information Leaflet Critique

I started designing some initial sketches of an idea that I liked the most.
I then talked through my ideas with a group of people. I discussed that my target audience is children between the ages of 8-12 because they are of an age when they go out to play without adult supervision and are less understanding of danger. I wanted my leaflet to be given out in schools and the message to be taught in lesson I talked about not making the folds to complicated or having none at all. I wanted only limited information because children do not really understand statistics so well. I also wanted my leaflet to be engaging, colourful and fun. The idea I pitched was to have a puddle shaped leaflet with one side looking calm, friendly with cursive, curved writing and bright colours. But then on the back have the information with a sharp font, dark colours and give it a more negative vibe. This is to show that water can look fine but be dangerous. I asked the group if I should add illustrations and weather I need to add a fold to make the leaflet more engaging and hands on.

Feedback
When sharing these design ideas I got some feed back,
  • Your stock will need to be thick to stop it bending
  • It is good to stick to minimal information when target audience is children
  • No statistics makes sense
  • Don't scare children to much with colour and image
  • Think about what children could get hurt on under the water.

Book content ideas and critique

I am really excited to start this brief as I love book design and in the brief it says that we can create a book
informed on our personal interests.
I knew that I wanted to create a book that you could read but that also would have fun activities as they
are the style of books that I enjoy the design of the most. I wanted to have my book subject based on
something that matters to me and that something is to help people. Something that I would like to target
in my book is positivity and have my book be a guide to try to help people be positive.
I started my ideas by creating some mind maps gaining ideas for content and design of the publication.
I know I want my target audience to be young adults and students,
I also want to have factual informationnin articles. In my book I
want to include a mix of quotes, photography, illustration and
activities. I would like the book to be somewhat smaller so it is
light and easy to carry around and for the book to be
saddle stitched.

I had a group critique with level 4 and 5 students about the content and style of my book and I got some helpful feedback.
  • A5 or pocket size seems best for use and target audience
  • The front cover should not be to serious or give much away as some people resist help.
  • Think about stock that is strong but can be wrote on.

Printed Money, Manchester Visit

Our new brief title is 'Licence to Print Money' and we have been told that we have to create a bank note of the future. We need to create the banknote using a traditional print method and make use of the colleges resources as we often just make everything digitally.

We went on a trip to Manchester to an exhibition at the peoples history museum called 'Show me the money' there I saw many currencies from different eras and it started to form my ideas for my own designs. A lot of the designs had in depth meanings behind them and included a famous person or landmark.

When I begin my initial ideas I want to think about wether I want my currency to be for a specific place or to be global and what to call it or include on it and why.

Small Publication Initial Ideas

I knew I wanted to discuss colour theory in my small publication as it was what I found most interesting. My initial ideas for my small publication was that I wanted to have it bright and colourful and have only minimal information that was easy to read. I decided I would create a leaflet with a 6 page letter fold. I started with some initial ideas for my font cover by looking at how I could include lots of colour.

I thought that maybe some of these designs would look better for a child's audience and that I needed to design something that appealed more to adults as the information inside the leaflet would be basic but still be to gain knowledge for adults and designers. I created a plan of what sort of information I would write on each page.

Information Design Research

For this brief I was told to design a information leaflet for the Information video I analysed in study task 03. I my case it was on water safety, I had to think about tone of voice within my design and making a leaflet that was best suited to my target audience.
First I made a Mindmap of ideas for the leaflet. I thought of different folds and shapes as well as underlining my target audience which is 8-12 year olds. I liked the idea of having a leaflet with two tones of voice because I wanted to put across the information in a scary way without scaring children to much by making them scared around water.
I noticed most leaflets that already exist is safety around swimming pools rather than lakes, streams and ponds. I want my leaflet to be different to this and cover a broader range of water. There are not a lot of leaflets for children about water safety and none at all in the tone of voice I am aiming for. A common theme in leaflets for children is bright colours and illustrations and large easy to read text.
I also began to collect some information that could go inside my leaflet. I knew I did not want to use statistics because numbers are'nt as meaningful to children and I wanted to go for only minimal information.
  • Places you can drown
  • Never swim alone
  • You can drown in only a small amount of water
  • Don't act silly around water
  • What to do if you feel like you are in danger of drowning
