Information Design Research

For this brief I was told to design a information leaflet for the Information video I analysed in study task 03. I my case it was on water safety, I had to think about tone of voice within my design and making a leaflet that was best suited to my target audience.
First I made a Mindmap of ideas for the leaflet. I thought of different folds and shapes as well as underlining my target audience which is 8-12 year olds. I liked the idea of having a leaflet with two tones of voice because I wanted to put across the information in a scary way without scaring children to much by making them scared around water.
I noticed most leaflets that already exist is safety around swimming pools rather than lakes, streams and ponds. I want my leaflet to be different to this and cover a broader range of water. There are not a lot of leaflets for children about water safety and none at all in the tone of voice I am aiming for. A common theme in leaflets for children is bright colours and illustrations and large easy to read text.
I also began to collect some information that could go inside my leaflet. I knew I did not want to use statistics because numbers are'nt as meaningful to children and I wanted to go for only minimal information.
  • Places you can drown
  • Never swim alone
  • You can drown in only a small amount of water
  • Don't act silly around water
  • What to do if you feel like you are in danger of drowning
