Typography Lecture

Today I had a design skills lecture on typography. I found it interesting finding out more about the anatomy of type and learn more terminology. We also discussed Vignellis ideas on typography.
“Out of thousands of typefaces, all we need are a few basic ones, and trash the rest.”
The argues that you only need 6 basic typefaces which are;
·      Garamond
·      Bodoni
·      Century Expanded
·      Futura
·      Times Roman
·      Helvetica

To an extent I agree with Vignelli in that there are to many typefaces in the world and some are terrible! However I think that you need more then the basic 6 when creating certain designs. I am going to read more into Vignelli and into the making of typefaces in the coming weeks to expand my knowledge and help influence my work.
